New Kingston Jamaica Skyline Photographs

I work on a tall(ish) building by Jamaica’s standards. While collecting my minimum wage monthly salary statement yesterday in the accounts department of the government ministry I noticed the great view from the 11th floor of the building of the skyline of New Kingston. Snapped a few shots, the better looking of which are posted below.

Jason, I think a fellow Jamaican disagrees with you:

      • jason says:

i wont even wast my time reading that. i have tell you one thing already i have given you evidence, i experience for my self and a can also post numerous articles of people saying this and that, but i don’t need any one to tell me. you have people who go to Trinidad on business trip stop in pos commercial area then return as soon as they Finnish.

        • gman says:

Actually, I know of Jamaicans that have visited Trinidad, and come back saying that they loved it. A well travelled businessman that I know recently visited Trinidad an loved it so much that he is planning on building a second home there.

        • gman says:

Also, Trinidad and Tobago actually gets about 1/2 million tourists every year. That’s not too bad considering that tourism puts only 10% into TnT’s GDP and is a relatively nascent industry. I know it does not compare in anyway to Jamaica (you are fairly accurate with Jamaica’s numbers in that Jamaica gets 2.5 million visitors when you factor in the cruise ship arrivals). Gotta give Jack his jacket, Jamaica has a well developed tourist industry for sure.

i just took two quotes where i had to laugh. this person knows nothing about Trinidad. i think they may mean Trinidad improve rather than more develop than jamaica. these are the quotes:

The number of cars on the road has visibly increased. Even small errands attract the most horrendous traffic, slowing progress to a crawl. It is clear that more people are on the roads, and driving is increasingly precarious as there is just no relaxing on clear roads within commuting hours.

        3
he kindof crimes that Trinidad experiences seem to be more about greed than need. There are very few despaerately poor Trinidadians, stealing because they are hungry, or just plain scared into taking what is not theirs. Instead, the rise in kindappings is driven by get-rich-quick thinking more than anything else.

this person is either posing as a Jamaican or stupid.

  1. jason says:

an to show you that that person that with the article knows nothing i just posted the poverty facts. is like me stop in Johannesburg south Africa and say the more develop than America. second jamaica has more than three daily news paper. 3 Trinidad traffic is the worst in the Caribbean. if there is no desperate poor in Trinidad then this shout not be happening:

the only place that is develop in Trinidad is POS. you have people you write blogs to be controversial or draws attention. as i said POS is very small, with a couple tall buildings stuck in an unorganized town:

      http://waterloojamaica.blogspot.com/2008/02/trinidad-seems-to-be-hurry-come-up.html

      • gman says:

In your visits to TnT, have you been to other parts? San Fernando the industrial capital (a tall building or two, one of the biggest malls in the Caribbean, a second National Performing Arts Centre being built there), Chaguanas, Arima, Trincity (site of the largest mall in the English speaking Caribbean), Tobago? These places are all linked by 4 lane highways and are just a couple of towns that I mentioned. So when did you go? For how long?

      • gman says:

Have you heard about the fast Ferry services between Port of Spain and Scarborough, and between Port of Spain and San Fernando?

  2. jason says:

    there are:

    5 cities

    67 towns

across jamaica. i can easily out number Trinidad with development mr, if that’s what you looking for.

you can also take a read at these:

    • gman says:

Thanks for the links. By the way, I was wondering if you could also post some links about the development in Trinidad that you know about – like the proposed rail system and the highway development so that folks can understand what you are talking about and make a fair comparison.

  3. jason says:

this thing keep deleting the comments

    • gman says:

Cool. But surely, with a per capita murder rate that is the 2nd highest in the world, and around 1800 killings in 2009 – surely there must be places in Jamaica like Laventille or worse, no?

    • gman says:

Any links to Jamaican shanty towns so that we can compare?

  4. jason says:

    jamaica has:

    5 cities

    67 towns

i could easily out number trinidad development.

    • gman says:

Haiti, the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country has at least 25 cities. Port Au Prince is way bigger than Kingston with over 3 million. Yet Haiti is considered less developed than Jamaica. Haiti’s HDI at .541 ranks 141st in the world. Jamaica’s at .766 is ranked 100th. While the HDI is just one aspect of a countries development, it indicates how well off a countries citizens are overall.

      • boynton20 says:

Haiti cannot maintain its large population, thats why, look at the u.s pop, britian, australia etc they have tons of people but they can maintain, haiti cannot, there was nothing to begin with regarding Haiti.

        • gman says:

The point that I was trying to make is that size does not = development, which is what you are pretty much agreeing with as well. Barbados is ranked ahead of Trinidad and Tobago in quality of life, yet in terms of population, can comfortably fit into metro POS or Kingston and there are no really tall buildings to speak of.

    • gman says:

I counted about 2 cities, and roughly 60 towns in TnT. Two of the towns – Chaguanas and Arima are being considered for city status as Arima has at least 40,000 and Chaguanas is estimated to be over 100,000. The government is also thinking about increasing the size of POS boundaries as it is outdated. As you’ve been there, you do know that there is urban development that sprawls way beyond the small downtown section that defines the city of POS right?

  5. jason says:

lol. i don’t care about ferry, isn’t that the same one some one was trying to stuff cloth in the gas section?. and i did not say there is no development in Trinidad, i would be lying if i said that. all am saying is that jamaica has way more infrastructure and development alround than Trinidad.jamaica is also twice the size of Trinidad. most of the eastern Caribbean study in jamaica there are close to 10 universities and 40 colleges. a lot of your Trinidad athletes currently train in jamaica at different track clubs and jamaica high performance training center. there are currently four large football academy under construction. when it comes to shopping malls we have that in abundant which tourist destination do not have shopping malls? and am talking about luxury and quality. and even tho i know jamaica has more infrastructure than Trinidad i would not go on their website or photos just to leave negative comments like what you started. i have no time to waste doing does crap and that could also show jealousy. it reminds me of the white people in America who go on you-tube to leave bad comments on every black videos, because they are jealous about black people talent and culture.

    • makus86 says:

am back jamaica is twice the size of trinidad are u on crack man what u smoking jamaica is small as hell son you crazy or wat get ur facts right bigger or not we still running things face it aj is ours u just can take the truth jason back off wit ur speculations and pay the u.s irs ok

      • boynton20 says:

Jamaica is actual a little more than twice the size of both Trinidad & Tobago combined, its a fact, look it up, and stop being ignorant, Jamaica is 11,100km2 and t&tcombines is only 5128km2, do the math, dont be ignorant. Jm population is also more than twice the size of t&t combined and kingstons population is around 700,000, like 6 times the pop. of port of spain, also kingston itself is 480km2, port of spain is oh, they didnt mention too small i guess, the buildings r all clustered together, desperate for more land, like i said b4 Venezuela needs to gobble it up. lol

        • gman says:

I could believe that Kingston’s size in 2010 is 700,000. I keep seeing pop. estimates at about 580,000 – 600,000.
POS estimates online are about 50,000 (1990) which is like that for Kingston, way outdated. The population of POS is defined for outdated city boundaries and was at one time over 100,000 in the 1960s. Since then people have moved out to the outlying areas and the surrounding urban area (metro POS) has grown by leaps and bounds. Latest estimates (year 2000) put it at about 600,000 just like how we can say that metro Kingston is maybe over 1 million. I would be a fool to compare POS to Kingston in terms of size. But the urban area of greater POS is actually a fairly good size for a Caribbean city.

  6. jason says:

to be honest i did not want to post the links, but i think if i just tell you, you may think i am lying. the Trinidad railway is in its planning stage where they are still trying to acquire lands but some residents especially farmers are angry. i already see all or most of the projects for Trinidad and if you are honest with your self you would admit that about 88% of those projects are only in POS. Trinidad and jamaica is developing faster than most Caribbean island when it comes to physical development, but both have crime problem. jamaica had a strong infrastructure before so they only need to add a few and reopen what was close . in Trinidad case they have to add a lot, because there was no development.

    • gman says:

The only point I wanted to make was that TnT has advanced way more than people think and expected. But yes, there are things about it still very 3rd world that gets me annoyed (like lack adequate water supply, hopefully the Govt desalination plants they are planning will finally solve that).
I ain’t got any disrespect for Jamaica and know that Jamaica had pretty good infrastructure compared to TnT from way back to the 70′s (in the oil boom years). I have some good Jamaican buddies (despite this TnT and Jamaica rivalry crap, LOL). Look forward to visiting one day so thanks for your education on the Jamaica tourism and infrastructure (good links).

    • gman says:

Hey Devon, I apologize for the negativity going on in your thread. No worries man, I like the Kingston pictures and like I said this is a thread about the beauty of Jamaica. Just for record I haven’t posted any negative stuff about Jamaica (except for the crime rate thing, because of Jason’s link.) I know the comparison thing ain’t going to get anybody anywhere. Any other statement about Jamaica I made is positive. I was just challenging Jason to back up his knowledge of Trinidad. As I said before, I look forward to visiting Jamaica and eating some authentic Jerk chicken. Peace bro.

Thanks for the effort you took to expand upon this post so thoroughly. I look forward to future posts.
There are various sea vessels involved in shipping to jamaica. It may include box boats or container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, ferries, cable layers, dredgers and barges.
