The Importance of Learning about Photography Properly
April 15, 2008 | Filed Under General, Personal | 3 Comments
I consider myself a photography enthusiast but my knowledge of photography itself is very limited. In the last few weeks I have taken it upon myself to learn more about this new activity I now call a hobby. I used an analogy while talking to a friend that I felt that a complete racing newbie who bought an entry level sports car and then felt like it was that easy to be among the big stars in racing. Substitute the racing referring for photography and the racecar for a camera and you now understand the way I have been feeling.
I barely know much about the advanced features of my semi-pro point and shoot camera, I still don’t fully understand the terms aperture, shutter speed and ISO among others and apart from a few buck-up shots here and there I have yet to take some very excellent photographs. This is all changing though and I have been taking steps to correct my ignorance.
Steps Include:
- buying myself a proper beginner digital photography book
- Browsing through Flickr and other online sites to pick up more photography ideas and develop my “photography eye”
- Reading through the manual for my Sony DSC-H9 “properly”
- Taking more trial and error shots to have a more hands on feeling and not just follow what I am told
- Be more confident about my photography ability
- Have a professional logo/watermark done for my blog
- Network with experienced, well respected local photographers
- Find out about, join or create and participate in a photography club
- Purchasing a second battery and memory card for my camera
- Go out to various places and TAKE MORE PICTURES!
A few of these steps have already been put in motion and my readers (if I have any besides a few friends) can expect me to post updates on my progress here on my photoblog. Thank you for reading.
Princess Nelly is always a willing model

I have a younger sister affectionately called Nelly. She is my little princess and always a willing model for me when i want to practise taking photos. School is out now for Easter break and she accompanied me to work a few days ago. I left work early to carry her to the park for a few hours and of course to take pictures.
I snapped quite a few and posted 4 of the better looking ones on flickr, of the four I posted the one below is my favourite.
